The reductions were spread across many different business units and different countries, a Microsoft spokesman was quoted by USA Today as saying in an emailed statement.
Among the 3,000 layoffs, 638 were in the Seattle region where Microsoft is based.
The majority of those who lost their jobs, close to 70 percent, were former Nokia employees, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella has said.
Microsoft acquired Nokia's mobile business in April for US$7.2 billion.
After this round of layoffs, Microsoft now has about 110,000 employees around the globe.
