Ishiguro is best known for his book "The Remains of the Day," which has also been turned into a popular movie of the same title.
Professor Sara Danius presented the award to Ishiguro.
"Dear Mr Ishiguro, it is my great pleasure to convey to you the warm congratulations of the Swedish Academy and to ask you to receive from the hands of his majesty the king (King Carl XVI Gustaf), the Nobel Prize for Literature," Danius said.
Ishiguro said upon receiving the prize:"The pride we feel when someone from our nation wins a Nobel Prize is different from the one we feel witnessing one of our athletes winning an Olympic medal."
"We don't feel the pride of our tribe demonstrating superiority over other tribes. Rather it's the pride that comes from knowing that one of us has made a significant contribution to our common human endeavor. The emotion aroused is a larger one."
