The dinner was held in honour of Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian President, and his wife Svetlana, who have been on a three-day visit to France.

President Sarkozy praised his Russian counterpart's stance（位置，立场） on the sensitive issue of human rights, capping two days of intense diplomatic activity.

Mr Sarkozy told Mr Medvedev: "Your attachment to the state of law... judicial security and defence of human rights eases the relations between our two countries."

This marks a thawing（融化） of the French president's stance against Russia.

During his 2007 election campaign, several months before he met Ms Bruni, Mr Sarkozy criticised the Russian army's actions in Chechnya（车臣） , where it has been accused of violations, and slammed his predecessor（前任，前辈） Jacques Chirac's cordial（兴奋的，热忱的） ties with Russia's then-president Vladimir Putin.
