He holds a lead of about one and a half minute over opening day winner Nasser Al-Attiyah.
Defending champion Stephane Peterhansel has had two hellish days so far. He is in 7th place, almost 7 minutes behind his Peugeot teammate Loeb.
Chinese driver He Zhitao is currently 36th.
On two wheels, title holder Toby Price is keeping a tight grip on the top position.
