British supermarket Waitrose has become the first British retailer to offer English wine for sale in China.
英国维特罗斯超市成为英国首家向中国供应葡萄酒的商家。
As part of the supermarket's continued support of the English wine industry, four English sparkling wines will be sold through the Royal Mail store on Tmall, an online marketplace operated by Alibaba Group, from today.
Four English wines were chosen for the launch, all priced between £25 and £30 a bottle.
These include three from vineyards relatively close to London: Ridgeview Bloomsbury from Sussex; Leckford Estate Brut 2013 from Hampshire and Wiston Estate Rose Brut from West Sussex, alongside Camel Valley Pinot Noir Rose Brut 2014 from Cornwall in the South West of England.
Becky Hull, English and Welsh wine buyer for Waitrose, said of the launch: 'We know that Western wines are increasing in popularity in China. This range of English wines represents an important and innovative part of the British food and drink industry.'
Julia Trustram Eve from English Wine Producers, commented: 'This is a fantastic step forward in showing international consumers what high quality wines are produced over here. Waitrose has chosen a great line up of wines that will be true ambassadors for British food and drink. I'm sure this great Waitrose initiative will encourage more visitors from China to explore our wines and vineyards further.'
