北京中小学操场跑道将实行新标准

Educational authorities in Beijing have begun the process of setting new standards for the construction and inspection of playgrounds and running tracks in primary and middle schools, according to a report by People's Daily.

《人民日报》报道,北京市教委已着手开始制定中小学操场跑道的建设检查新标准。

This comes after the renovated school playground at Beijing No.2 Experimental Elementary School's Baiyunlu campus allegedly released toxic gases and many students exhibited various symptoms after using the running track. Although preliminary investigations have shown that the material used in renovating the playgrounds in the school met the national standard, parents of the affected students have been calling for further investigation into the incident.

The educational authorities in Beijing on Monday ordered that all ongoing or planned construction of school tracks in the city be suspended before the official release of the new standards.

In the meantime, a thorough inspection of the city's school playgrounds and running tracks is to be carried out, including its building materials, material suppliers and the construction process, to see if they meet earlier standards.

If violations are found, the authorities promise to take resolute action including the suspension of use, rebuilding and total transformation. No excuses will be permitted, and the process will not be halted, said the education authorities, so that a healthy learning environment can be assured.
