Tony Windsor, Bob Katter and Rob Oakeshott held long talks with both sides

Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott held the balance of power in parliament after a fellow independent MP, Bob Katter, backed opposition leader Tony Abbott.

The dramatic announcement ended more than two weeks of political deadlock(僵局,停顿) following indecisive(犹豫不决的,非决定性的) elections.

Ms Gillard's Labor Party now has a one-seat majority over the Liberal-led coalition(联合,合并) in the 150-seat lower house.

The BBC's Nick Bryant in Sydney says that with such narrow margins(薄利,没有多少余地) involved, it is going to be quite difficult for her to govern as she wanted to do.

Ms Gillard ousted former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as Labor leader in an internal party coup in June. She had been his deputy.
