五角大楼支持奥巴马的延迟撤军计划

The Pentagon has expressed its support for President Obama's announcement to prolong the US military presence in Afghanistan.

美国总统奥巴马宣布美军驻军阿富汗的时间将延长,五角大楼表示支持。

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said he was confident that the US allies will offer a significant contribution to the region in the coming years.

"I'll let the allies and the partners speak for themselves, but I can just tell you that from our visit to NATO last week, to Brussels, that there was a significant conversation about Afghanistan and the effort to support the Afghan government."

US secretary of defense Ashton Carter also voiced his support, saying the decision is also crucial to the safety of the Americans at home.

"We're adjusting our presence, based on conditions on the ground, to give the United States and our allies the capability to sustain a robust counter-terrorism platform, denying a safe haven for terrorist and violent extremist organizations. This will keep Americans safer back home."
