Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has met with Chinese ambassador Zhao Jianhua, in hopes of enhancing bilateral relations.

This comes after Duterte remarked on his desire for talks with China over the row in the South China Sea.
Zhao expressed the view that China is also willing to work with the Philippines to strengthen bilateral cooperation to benefit peoples of the two countries.
China's relations with the Philippines have worsened after the latter unilaterally initiated an arbitration case against China in 2013 over territory in the South China Sea.
China has repeated opposed the case, suggesting the dispute be settled through bilateral dialogues.
