新一轮叙利亚和谈在日内瓦展开

A new round of peace talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups is now underway in Geneva.

叙利亚政府与反对派集团已经在日内瓦展开新一轮的和平会谈。

It is focusing on practical issues such as the political transition of Syria.

Syria's U.N. ambassador Bashar Jaafari says the peace talks so far have been constructive.

"As I said the dialogue was positive and constructive. We as a delegation did what our responsibility has called upon us to do, which is helped him to ensure good preparation in order to go from form to substance. We submitted ideas and views under the title basic elements for peaceful solution, political solution - basic elements for a political solution."

In the so-called proximity talks, the two sides don't meet face to face, but meet separately with the U.N. special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and his team.

De Mistura said if the talks fail, Syria will descend into even more serious civil war.

"To make sure the talks are focusing on the real issue, political transitions. The alternative — some people call it'Plan B'as you know. Well, as far as I know the only plan B available is return to war and to even worse war than we had so far."
